It does sound tempting doesn’t it? Be creative. Express yourself. Share your thoughts and ideas with the world. Be your own boss. Throw a few cupcake parties. Set your own schedule. Give away some stickers. Work from home or a coffee house. Score some VC money when your content gets even a little attention. Sexy stuff.

A recent tweet from Robert Scoble caught my attention: “I just gave a talk to about 30 top executives around the world (non tech) and almost none knew about Twitter, Qik, or Kyte. http://ff.im/pcze”
At first I was stunned that these players in the high-end business world were not familiar with these tools. Admittedly Qik and Kyte are a bit on the geek side of the equation, but how can they not be familiar with Twitter? And then I realized that it doesn’t matter why they aren’t familiar with Twitter. All that matters is that they aren’t.
Until the mainstream sees Twitter for what it could be then we’re just a relatively small pool of geeks talking to ourselves. A few people can use Twitter to our advantage but if the mainstream doesn’t recognize the power of a new tool then it might as well not exist. The important question is: Once the real world finds Twitted, a la Facebook, will Twitter maintain any value or will it just become another broken technology like email?
I’m betting on “broken” so enjoy it and exploit it while you can.

Dreams and Setbacks : Life Decanted
Naturally, as is the tradition, about halfway through the flight my father-in-law turned the controls over to me and told me to keep it straight and level. It was awesome! I was flying a real plane at 5,000 feet! How many other folks can say they’ve piloted a plane? Well, few enough that it was still cool.

Winter Tomato Dreams : Life Decanted
You would try to cheat the plant Gods by starting your seeds in a warm corner of your basement or maybe on top of your refrigerator. Trays full of dirt. Each one draped in wet newsprint to keep the moisture in. And you would wait. Maybe a week. Maybe two weeks. Waiting for the magical moment that your peaked under the soggy classified ads and were rewarded with the first shoots of life from your super hybrid of the moment tomato seeds.

Texas prep hoops team wants to forfeit 100-0 win
As the father of a little girl that also struggles with learning differences this story touched me deeply. I’ve never read a clearer example of “losing with dignity” being better than winning.
The coach of The Covenant School team needs to be suspended for the rest of the season at a minimum. And, frankly, asking to forfeit the game after the fact isn’t exactly going to help anyone who was hurt by this classless action. It will only serve to ease a few guilty minds. Sorry folks. You rang the bell already. Now live with the humiliation for the rest of your days like you should. No asterisk is going to fix what you did to those honorable girls that played hard, to the best of their ability, to the very end.
Well done Dallas Academy. You’re obviously striving to create better people at your school.
P.S. I don’t really blame the players from The Covenant School for running up the score. They are young people that were being coached and cheered on to do exactly what they did. I just hope in the light of day they’ve learned a valuable lesson from all of this. Be kind. Be classy. But most importantly – don’t trust adults. We’re all idiots.
